Hormonal Replacement Therapy Q & A

Will I know if my hormones are imbalanced?

Probably yes. You’ll likely start to have several symptoms if your hormones are imbalanced, often including:

  • Mood swings and depression
  • Weight gain and fat buildup around your abdomen
  • Memory loss and difficulty concentrating
  • Joint pain and widespread pain
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Insomnia and extreme fatigue

Women may also experience vaginal dryness and pain during intercouse, while men might have difficulty performing in the bedroom.

How are pellets administered?

Bioidentical hormone pellets are implanted right underneath your skin. All you’ll feel is a small pinch, similar to when you get a shot or have your blood drawn. The benefit to having your hormone replacement therapy administered this way is that your body can absorb exactly what it needs, since the pellets let out slow, gradual doses of the hormones you require. With other formularies, like pills, creams, and injections, you might get too much of a hormone all at once, ultimately leaving you with abnormal hormone levels.

Are bioidentical hormones natural?

Yes. The bioidentical hormone replacement pellets often used by Dr. Lafferty are derived from yams. This type of plant naturally contains hormones that are nearly identical to hormones created in the human body in both men and women. Hormones derived from yams are also beneficial because they haven’t been associated with any type of allergens, so you’re less likely to have any undesirable side effects.

Do the hormone replacement therapy pellets last for a long time?

Yes. But it depends on your specific needs and current hormone levels. After Dr. Lafferty runs some labs and evaluates your symptoms, he’ll be able to determine the right dosage for your body and calculate your optimal dosage. For most men and women, pellet therapy lasts for three to six months, depending on your individual absorption rate. If you’re very active, have a lot of stress, or live in an extremely hot environment, your pellet therapy might last closer to the three-month mark. During your appointment, Dr. Lafferty can let you know what your realistic expectation should be.
